Study Life Through the Art of Acting

Whether you want to take the stage, work behind the scenes to create the magic, or study great plays, the Providence Theatre Program has something for you! We stage an annual large-scale production, performing to sold-out audiences as well as local high schools. Our touring troupe, Prov Players, travels locally, performing one-acts for local high schools, and various other organizations. We also produce student-led productions, so that students can learn to develop their directing skills.

Theatre is essentially fascinated with human behavior and interaction, and with human struggles and achievements, and the stage is the place where students in the theatre program do their learning and exploring. To study theatre is to study life. As a part of studying in our program, students develop skills as theatre artists in order to seek truth and tell truth through the medium of the stage. We emphasize skill in textual analysis as the foundation for all good theatre, which serves as the essential starting point from which to translate the page to the stage. Ultimately, students are mentored in their theatrical skills to learn to serve the truth of the particular story we are telling/staging. In the process, that truth that we are serving has the power to transform us, and hopefully our audiences as well. Good theatre helps us to think and feel in new ways. As the great South African Playwright, Athol Fugard has said, “In the course of a night watching a play in a theatre you can have a new thought, a new sensitivity to something. And if you change people, you’ll end up changing a society”. As Christians who practice theatre, our goal is to equip students to use theirs gifts and skills to be agents of change through their art.
