What is Field Education?

Field Education is supervised volunteer experience in church, para church, and community organizations. As a graduation requirement, it is an integral part of a student’s overall educational experience and is an expression of their personal Christian commitment. Practical volunteer service goes hand in hand with the classroom training and co-curricular activities that provide students with a holistic education.

Through Field Education, students are given the opportunity to deepen their own understanding of what it means to be a servant in attitude and action. They learn to give of themselves in the church, in society, and in everyday living. Students develop their own personal gifts and skills as well as a personal philosophy of service. They are given the opportunity to expand their own spheres of influence as well as the kingdom of God.

The Director of Field Education works with students in finding opportunities suited to both the needs and the abilities of each student. Students are encouraged to serve in a number of different settings, enabling them to adequately put into practice principles learned in the classroom.

It is not bending towards the underprivileged from a privileged position, it is not a reaching out from on high to those who are less fortunate below; it is not a gesture of sympathy or pity for those who fail to make it in the upward pull. On the contrary, compassion means going directly to those people and places where suffering is most acute and building a home there.”
