Did you know...?

The Bible has provided the basis for many of the western world's most cherished institutions, from legal systems, to the Social Sciences, to three world religions (Judaism, Christianity and Islam). The history of this ‘reception’ of the Bible has been long and turbulent, with the Bible used for good and ill.  Courses like The Bible and the Arts, The Construction of Gender in the Hebrew Bible, and Christian Thought: Religious Themes in Literature all help you to understand how the Bible has shaped your culture, and how culture itself has shaped our understanding of the Bible.

The Bible and the Modern World

The serious study of the Bible cannot be dismissed if we want an intelligent understanding of this text that has had an impact on the cultural life of the world, unequalled by any other text(s). A informed understanding of the Bible in the modern world requires committed people with expertise in a wide range of disicplines:  history and archaeology, sociology, media and communication studies, art history, political science, cultural studies, philosophy, ethics, linquistics, literature, and such.
