The mission of Providence College is to educate students as Christians at a university level to think, live, and serve in the church and society. The College is part of the larger Providence College and Theological Seminary family, a learning community of more than 500 students. Providence bridges the gap between head knowledge and practical Christianity. There is a wide selection of programs, and most courses are transferable to major universities in Canada and the United States. A Providence education is an excellent gateway to your future. Providence College has something for everyone. Check out the programs at the left.
Christian University CollegeWhat do we mean by a Christian university college? In Canada, it is commonly understood that degrees are granted by universities. Colleges have offered certificates for one-year programs and diplomas for two and three-year programs. A more recent category of smaller higher educational institutions are now known as university colleges. Provincial governments have chartered selected colleges to grant degrees. This is the case for Providence, which, under a charter of the Government of Manitoba, grants certificates, diplomas and degrees at the undergraduate (Bachelor) level and the graduate (masters, doctoral) levels. University arts programs include three general areas of study: humanities, mathematics and physical sciences, and social sciences. At Providence, these areas of study are combined with the study of Holy Scripture to form the foundation of a general education for all students regardless of their major. Building on this dual foundation, students may select for their major a liberal arts discipline, or a professional area of study such as youth leadership, business, aviation, social work, communications, or Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL). A Christian university arts education encourages character development and moral conviction that are based upon the truths of Christianity. It is designed to lay a foundation for a life of leadership and service in the midst of cultural diversity and globalization. A Christian higher education promotes the intellectual and personal characteristics that are basic to success in any vocation. It provides students with a thoughtful worldview based on Christian truth and develops general knowledge across a broad spectrum of subjects. It helps students develop their intellectual capacities so that they can be strong contributors to society. In today’s world of rapidly changing job markets, a foundation in the liberal arts allows one the flexibility to build in any number of directions. Employers are looking for college graduates who are bright and talented, and who have sound character traits and a broad foundation of knowledge. Christian seminaries prefer a strong liberal arts background as a prerequisite to ministerial training. The goal of a Providence College education is to teach people a breadth of subject matter, to give them the capacity to think critically and creatively about problems, and to prepare them to live and serve as Christians in society. Transferring to Another Institution Such as a UniversityStudents who wish to keep open the door to further education at a university or seminary will want to be aware that transfers and graduate studies are based upon the receiving university’s assessment of the work done at Providence, whether it is a completed degree or courses toward a degree. We wish to work with you in this process. There are things that you can do right away in preparation for the time of your application. Please speak with an academic counsellor in the Registrar's office about transfer possibilities.
