Computer Registration and Service Levels for Students
User accounts are available for students currently enrolled in courses and paying student fees.If you already have user account and want to connect your computer, please see the bookstore. See below for more information on our various levels of service.
Level 1 - Bronze Service (All Students) - No Fee
Students may logon and access the Internet from Providence computers in the computer lab, library, Hanna foyer, and Student Life Centre lounge area, and the seminary lounge. In addition to Internet access the lab computers have Microsoft Office and other applications and laser printing available. There is a per page charge for laser printing. Color printing is available at Mail Services by the bookstore.
How do I get started?
This is our standard service. You do not need to see anyone or pay anything. All students are given a network account when they register for classes. Logon instructions are included in the registration package and are posted by the computers. Level 2 and 3 users will generally use this service in addition to their other service and all users must initially logon in the computer labs or the library to activate their network account.
Level 2 - Silver Service (Commuter Students) - $39 Plus Taxes Per Semester
This service is for commuters who want to be able to connect their own notebook to the Providence network. This offers the convenience of working on your own computer while having access to our high speed Internet connection during building or library opening hours. Wireless access is available throughout the main buildings. There is also 12 network plug-ins available at the study carrels in the library as well as plug-ins available in the private study rooms and in the Student Life Centre lounge. Level 1 access is included.
How do I get started?
You will need a notebook with a network port or wireless ability. (Hardware and advice are available in the Bookstore.) Come to the Providence Bookstore for a registration form. The form will detail how to get your unique computer ID (also known as mac address or ethernet adapter number). Return the completed form and your fee to the Bookstore and your notebook will be added to the list of permitted computers. You will also receive a form with details on how to set up your laptop for our network.
Level 3 - Gold, Gold Plus or Platinum Service (Residence Students) $98, $142, or $185 Per Semester (4 months)
This service is for resident students who want high speed Internet access in their dorm room and other buildings on campus. The service is provided by registering at Providence Bookstore. It offers the convenience of working on your own notebook or computer almost anywhere on campus with 24 hour Internet access in your own room. Level 1 and level 2 access is included. Wireless access is available in any dorm (also wired for better throughput) and both main buildings and even the lawns outside. The present service is rated at 512 kbps. GOLD PLUS – rated 768 kbps (1.5x regular download speed). PLATINUM – rated at 1024 kbps or double regular download speed. Most students use the regular Gold level presently.

Other FAQ's
- The Trailer court has wired service and can access the nearest wireless access points.
- Providence House, Seminary House, and Hunt apartments have wireless service only.
- All other Dorms are both wired and wireless. Call the Director of Bookstore Services for further details if you have questions.
- Dorm residents can also arrange a telephone line and/or telephone line plus dial-up Internet connection through local service provider MTS if they prefer.
Configuration: We supply detailed instructions for setting up your machine. If you need special help, someone from the bookstore is available for $5.00 (plus taxes) or $8.50 if we need to go to your dorm room. If there is a problem in the line or network system there will be no charge.
SETUP instructions for Providence Student Network
Finding your Unique computer ID (mac address) for the 
registration sheet (Students returning using the Renewal sheet will not need this unless they have brouught a different computer).
Finding your NIC Adapter Address(also known as the ethernet address or mac address) – is required to register your computer. It is a unique number assigned to each network card, and it is used to identify your computer’s activity on the network.
Windows 2000/ XPnbsp;click on Start and then Run to open a command prompt ( type “cmd” into the “run” command line) and then in that box type “ipconfig /all” - press [Enter]. Record the numbers. Type "exit" and [Enter] to leave the command prompt.
For VISTA /Win7 you should enter “cmd” in the search box to get the command prompt box and follow the instructions above. Note that the tunnel addresses are below the ones you are looking for so you need to move to the top of the page to find your information.
Setting up your network connections (in construction, instructions are being revised APR 10)
Since the visual pages and order differ in each operating system, we have separate instructions for each. The Main setting is to remove File and Printer Sharing of any kind from the internet connections and any proxy from IE or other brousers.
